Infusion Nursing Standards
of Practice Overview
The Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice was developed to meet the evolving needs of the infusion patient. With the complexity of patient conditions along the healthcare continuum, and the broad scope of infusion nursing practice, the Standards acts as a guide in addressing the patient’s infusion needs. Working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, knowledge of the Standards can be shared and integrated into the patient’s plan of care.
The Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice incorporates an emphasis on evidence-based practice and research. In revising the Standards for 2006, a distinguished committee of experts in the healthcare field focused on defining the scope of practice and educational requirements for nurses practicing infusion therapy. The language reflects changes in terminology, technology, and practice settings, and standards have been added since the previous addition, providing criteria for safe infusion delivery practice. The 2006 edition also includes new illustrations and updated references.
Use the Standards’ measurable components to help establish nursing competencies, institute performance improvement criteria, and identify and evaluate patient outcomes. The Standards can also help you develop education programs specific to infusion nursing. Incorporating these well-documented standards into your practice will help you deliver safe patient care—the ultimate goal of the infusion therapy specialty.
