Each Standard is identified by a number, according to general infusion care categories:
- Standards are delineated by numbers. The Standard provides criteria for nursing action and accountability. These statements are to be used in the development of infusion-specific or infusion-related policies and procedures, performance improvement programs, and education curricula.
- Practice Criteria provide specific guidance criteria for the implementation of the corresponding Standard. The Criteria are to be used to develop infusion-specific or -related policies and procedures.
- The use of the term “nurse” describes activities that are appropriate for both the licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) and the registered nurse (RN); use of the term “RN” describes those actions appropriate only for the registered nurse.
- References are listed at the end of each Standard. These are contemporary publications used to identify, define, and support evidence-based nursing practice. These may serve as additional resources for clinicians seeking to enhance knowledge and understanding of a particular infusion practice.
