The minimum passing score is established using the Angoff method, a criterion-referenced methodology in which expert judges estimate the passing probability of each question on a “base form” of the exam. Ratings are averaged to set the minimum passing score, ensuring those who pass have demonstrated the expertise the credential represents. Because new exam forms are pre-equated against item difficulty and discrimination, the level of expertise required to pass is preserved across forms, though the numeric passing point may shift slightly form to form.
Individuals who do not pass the exam and believe it was incorrectly graded, administered inconsistently with INCC policy, or experienced a major disruption may file an appeal. Disruptions should be reported to the testing supervisor on exam day. Appeals must be submitted in writing within 15 days of receiving results.
The CRNI® designation carries significant national credibility, and with it the responsibility to protect the integrity of the credential. The INCC Board of Directors has established a Disciplinary Committee to investigate alleged violations and protect the public from misrepresentation or ethical violations by applicants or certificants.
INCC may sanction an applicant or certificant for reasons including: irregularities in connection with the exam; failure to pay required fees; unauthorized use of INCC materials, logos, or the CRNI® name; false or misleading statements in an application; misrepresentation of certification status; failure to cooperate in a disciplinary investigation; regulatory license suspension; or other conduct detrimental to the profession and the patients it serves.
Information about candidates and their exam results is confidential. Studies and reports concerning candidates will not contain identifiable information unless authorized by the candidate. INCC will verify an individual’s certification status — including name and current good-standing status — only in response to a verification request submitted with the certificant’s name and address at https://www.ins1.org/crni/verify-a-crni.
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, all reasonable special requests will be accommodated. Complete the Special Accommodation section on the exam registration page and upload a letter from a health care or education professional explaining the requirements. Requests must be received by the regular deadline. Accommodated exam appointments are scheduled by calling PSI at (833) 333-4755.
